    The University of Edinburgh is a ∞✘;public researc‌ ↓h university in&n  ±¶bsp;Edinburgh, Scotland. Granted a ♦♠>£;royal charter by Ki₩&λng James VI ₽§ δ;in 1582 and officially opened in 1583, it is o​λγ♣ne of Scotland's four ancient uni£δversities and the si₹​✔xth-oldest university in continu‌♦ous operation in the&n ×∑∏bsp;English-speaking wor ×¥σld.[1] The university played a♠‌£¶n important role in Edinburgh b♣ ecoming a chief intellectual centre during the→φ"& Scottish Enlightenment and cont≠↔™§ributed to the city bei↕×α ng nicknamed the "Athens of the ≤→North".

     

    Edinburgh is a member of several associations×♥≤ of research-intensive universit >Ω<ies, including the Coimbra Grouβ≥¶¶p, League of European Re↕↕£εsearch Universities,&n☆×¶bsp;Russell Group, Una Europa,β​↔↕ and Universita∑ε₩s 21. In the&nbs♠®​σp;fiscal year endin♦↔₽g 31 July 2021, it had a total income of £↑€;1,175.6 million, of wΩ¥£hich £324.0 million was froδ↔¶§m research grants and contracts, with the&§α©←nbsp;third-largest endowment&nb☆♠δ sp;in the UK, behind only Camb×‌ridge and Oxford. The u®♥≤niversity has five main campuses in th×≤∏e city of Edinburgh, whichλ'♦ include many buildings of h®"‌≠istorical and architectural σ≥‍significance such as those in the Ol≈ €d Town.

Barrie, Sir?Arthur ₽∞Conan Doyle, Sir?Walter ±<☆☆Scott, and?Robert Louis Stevenson.?The univer≠££ sity counts several heads of state and go ∑δvernment amongst its graduates, including?thre​÷e British Prime Ministers. Three?Supre δme Court Justices of the UK?were ed‍₹>'ucated at Edinburgh, as were several?Olympic?★"<≥gold medallists.
